Is there any such thing as a bad cookie?  Doubtful, unless the recipe is really off or worse, you have a great mix you’ve made but get distracted and they burn in the oven. We’ve had that happen! But a favorite cookie, that is hard to pick. The classic favorites  for many are warm chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, gingerbread, butter cookies, peanut butter…the list is long.  And we like to play with recipes and add our own special ingredients, or sometimes we go vegan for family members who don’t or can’t eat cookies with the staple ingredients.

There is a wealth of cookie recipes to be found on the internet. If you’re in the mood for a new idea or want to surprise your family with a great new treat, try visiting allrecipes.com for cookie recipes . They have 1000’s of recipes with lots of helpful recipe reviews for insights on what works and what doesn’t.

Mix it in style

We love adding color to our kitchen whenever we can. Many of our main tools that are on the counter regularly are in similar colors like stainless and white, but it’s a lot of fun to add bright colors with our extras and accessories instead of going with something plain.

We really like these great mixing bowls and matching ceramic whisks. They come in lots of colors and add some fun color to our projects and our cabinets.

There is nothing like a fresh,  homemade muffin to start your day off right. Like a warm blueberry muffin or banana chocolate chip - with a delicious cup of fresh brewed coffee or cappucino. Actually they also make a tasty dessert - especially if you make warm up a chocolate chip muffin so that the chips melt in your mouth.

Smoothies are a great anytime of year, but they’re an especially perfect treat when the summer heat arrives.  Delicious and nutritious, a refreshing smoothie makes a great snack for young and old alike.

Simple to make, they require just a few ingredients- which you can play with and modify to your personal liking.  There are lots of great recipes to be found featuring any fruit you can imagine like berry, banana, kiwi, rasberry, strawberry, cantelope- or substitute  your personal favorite. A great tip is to freeze your fruit before making your smoothie instead of using ice.

Don’t own a smoothie maker? No need to run and and buy one, if you own a quality blender, it will do the trick nicely.

For the love of chocolate

Posted in Sweets  by tortades

“I have this theory that chocolate slows down the aging process…. It may not be true, but do I dare take the chance?”

There are legions of chocoholics and chocolate fanatics among us and the truthfully, how many of us can turn down an offer of chocolate? Its use dates back thousands of years when it was first used as a drink  prior the Maya civilization. Now, whether it’s dark, milk or white- chocolate has become one of the most popular flavors in the world. Some say that part of the pleasure of enjoying chocolate is due to its melting point being lower than ours, causing it to “melt in our mouth.” And to think it all begins with the football-sized fruit of the cacao tree.

Now we’ve all had chocolate in many forms, and some does taste so much better than others. So what is it that makes them different? Are there “chocolate-tasting” events held much like “wine-tasting” events? Yes, there are! Many people plan home parties with a chocolate tasting theme – some even bringing in a resident “expert” stocked with a variety of quality chocolates for the guests to savor. Here are some simple ways to experience chocolate and learn to taste the difference. These are things you’ll want to keep in mind if you plan on using chocolate in your baking and want the best results. Here are some features to look for:

  1. How does it look? You’ll want it to be smooth and shiny looking. If it’s cracked and dull, it’s probably not very fresh and will negatively affect the results of your dessert dish.
  2. How does it smell? Much like evaluating wine, you’ll want to take sniffs of the chocolate. Fresh, tasty chocolate should smell good and make you want to eat it! If it doesn’t smell good, it won’t likely taste very good.
  3. Does it break nicely or does it crumble? A nice, clean break will indicate the quality is good.
  4. How does it taste? It should taste and feel good in your mouth. It should melt into a creamy texture and it should leave a pleasing taste in your mouth afterwards. It should taste and feel satisfying.

Cakes | Gelato | Ices | Sorbets

Welcome to Torta Desserts

Thanks for your interest in torta bakery. We are a small bakery in the northwest quadrant of Washington, DC, specializing in frozen desserts and cakes.

We are acquiring our table and chairs, studying the science of serving coffee, researching free wireless, and preparing for health inspection. Meanwhile, we are keeping our block and alley clean.

We are also trying to restore light, and structural support to the alley streetlamp that the city installed in July 2005. Many thanks go to Neighborhood Service Coordinator, Ayanna and her assistant Kim for their tireless efforts to get that streetlamp fixed.
